In a tragic incident, a young day laborer was killed by a lightning strike while working in Chalan Beel in Singra upazila, Natore district, on August 2, 2026. Milon Uddin, 30, son of Minhaj Uddin from Nojorpur village under Kolom union, was cutting and retting jute with several other laborers when heavy rain and thunderstorms began. Seeking shelter, the workers moved to a safer location. However, Milon returned to the field to collect his food container and clothes, which led to his fatal encounter with the lightning.

Milon was struck by lightning and quickly rescued, but despite the immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the Singra Upazila Health Complex. Officer-in-Charge of Singra Police Station Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that the tragic event occurred around 3:00 pm.

Chalan Beel, a wetland area, is commonly used for jute harvesting, which involves labor-intensive tasks and can often be conducted in open fields. Weather-related incidents, particularly during the monsoon season, pose significant risks to workers who are often vulnerable due to the lack of proper protective measures.

This incident highlights the dangers faced by day laborers who work in exposed environments. The need for better safety protocols and emergency response systems is increasingly evident, particularly in rural areas where such fatalities can occur with little warning.

Milon Uddin’s death is a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the importance of workplace safety. As the monsoon season continues, authorities and local communities are urged to take necessary precautions to protect workers from such natural calamities.
