# Life Imprisonment for Alleged Yaba Smuggler in Chattogram, Another Defendant Acquitted

*Md. Shafiqul Islam has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Chattogram Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge for smuggling yaba tablets.*

Md. Shafiqul Islam, an alleged drug dealer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Chattogram Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Tajul Islam for smuggling yaba tablets. The sentence also includes a fine of Taka 20,000, with an additional six months in jail in default of payment. The case dates back to July 7, 2019, when Shafiqul was apprehended by the Karnaphuli Police Station with 4,300 pieces of yaba tablets concealed in tubes of Betnovate-Cream.

Shafiqul, aged 46 and the son of the late Abdul Sheikh, hails from Kushtia district. He was caught during a raid in front of the Karnaphuli CNG and Filling Station in the Moizartek Mor area. During interrogation, Shafiqul admitted to purchasing the yaba pills from another individual, Monirul Islam, leading to charges against both under the Narcotics Control Act.

The trial began with the framing of charges on December 7, 2021. According to Court Bench Assistant SM Kawsar Sagar, testimonies from five out of eight witnesses were recorded. Despite the evidence presented, Monirul Islam was acquitted, while Shafiqul was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Yaba, a potent stimulant also known as methamphetamine, has become a significant concern in Bangladesh. The drug, often smuggled from neighboring countries, has led to increased law enforcement efforts to curb its distribution. The life sentence handed down to Shafiqul Islam underscores the severity with which the judiciary treats drug trafficking cases.
