Khulna Development Authority (KDA) Chairman Advocate SM Shafiqul Alam Mona stressed the need for a greener and climate-resilient Khulna, highlighting that urban planning should incorporate sufficient greenery and open spaces to ensure a healthy environment. Mona made these remarks while inaugurating a tree plantation programme organized by Amra Khulnabashi at Khulna Zila School.

## National Movement for Afforestation

Mona praised the government's initiative to plant 250 million saplings across the country over the next five years, describing it as a national movement aimed at environmental protection. The KDA, he said, is proud to be a partner in this campaign, with plans to plant and distribute more than 1 lakh saplings in areas under its jurisdiction, including educational institutions, roadsides, residential neighbourhoods, and religious establishments.

## Importance of Afforestation

Highlighting the environmental importance of afforestation, Mona noted that planting more trees is crucial for protecting Khulna, which is adjacent to the Sundarbans, from the adverse impacts of climate change and rising global temperatures. He urged all concerned to ensure proper care and maintenance of every tree planted.

## Ecological and Economic Benefits

The KDA chairman underscored the need to plant fruit-bearing, timber, and medicinal trees to help maintain ecological balance while meeting nutritional and economic needs. He also emphasized the KDA's commitment to implementing its development and environmental initiatives through consultation with journalists, environmentalists, political leaders, and people from all walks of life.

## Community Involvement

The tree plantation programme was chaired by Khulna Zila School Headmaster Mohammad Farukul Islam and attended by teachers, Amra Khulnabashi leaders, and local dignitaries. The event demonstrated the community's active involvement in environmental initiatives.
