Justice (Retd.) Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury, former National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman, has called for expediting e-Judiciary reforms, including AI-based case management and livestreaming of high-profile court proceedings, to restore public confidence in the judiciary. Speaking at the 8th A K Khan Memorial Law Lecture-2026, themed 'Trust Deficit in Bangladesh Judiciary: A Way Forward,' he emphasized the need for transparency as one of the five key pillars to rebuild public trust. He suggested that judgments should be published promptly and that livestreaming high-profile cases could help dispel perceptions of secrecy surrounding court proceedings. Simplifying legal language in judgments would also make judicial decisions more understandable to ordinary people.

## Key Pillars for Rebuilding Trust

Justice Chowdhury outlined five key pillars needed to rebuild public trust in the judiciary: integrity and impartiality, efficiency and innovation, transparency, accountability, and unblemished conduct. He stressed the importance of greater automation of judicial procedures and a gradual transition to e-Judiciary to help reduce the backlog of more than 45 lakh pending cases across the country.

## Challenges Facing the Judiciary

He identified perceived corruption, case backlogs, political influence, and limited access to justice for rural citizens as four major challenges facing the country's judicial system. Addressing these issues, he urged judges to embrace technology and support the development of AI-driven tools to estimate case timelines and improve resource allocation. He also stressed the responsible use of social media to keep people informed about judicial matters.
