- The innovation aims to reduce food waste, address malnutrition, and support the agricultural economy.

Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) has achieved a significant milestone by patenting an innovative technology to produce a mineral-rich nutrient concentrate from jackfruit seeds. This breakthrough transforms agricultural waste into a valuable nutritional resource, addressing both food waste and malnutrition issues in Bangladesh.

## Patented Innovation

The patented technology, developed by Professor Dr. Md. Emdadul Haque and his postgraduate researcher Md. Akram Hossain, focuses on extracting and concentrating essential minerals from jackfruit seeds. This innovation has been recognized by the government of Bangladesh and marks the first patented invention since the institution was renamed Gazipur Agricultural University. It brings the university's total number of patented technologies to 21.

## Transforming Agricultural Waste

Every year, large quantities of jackfruit are produced in Bangladesh, but a significant portion is wasted due to inadequate preservation facilities and weak marketing systems. Jackfruit seeds, which are often discarded, contain valuable nutrients. The new technology increases the mineral concentration in dried jackfruit seeds from around two percent to over 33 percent, representing a 16- to 17-fold increase.

## Potential Impact

The mineral concentrate, rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, and manganese, can be incorporated into processed foods to enhance their nutritional value. This innovation has the potential to reduce food waste, promote the development of jackfruit-based industries, and provide farmers with higher returns. It also aims to improve food security, address malnutrition, and strengthen Bangladesh's agriculture-based economy.

## Why This Matters for Bangladesh

The development of this technology is crucial for Bangladesh, where deficiencies in essential nutrients remain a major cause of malnutrition. By transforming agricultural waste into a valuable resource, this innovation not only enhances food security but also supports the agricultural economy and promotes sustainable practices.
