A Dhaka court today ordered the arrest of former Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah in a case related to the 2024 July Mass Uprising. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain passed the order as police produced Prof Kalimullah before the court and pleaded to show him arrested. The court later sent him back to jail.

The investigation officer, sub-inspector Md Abu Sayed of Uttara West Police Station, filed the plea on July 28 to show Prof Kalimullah arrested in the case. According to the case documents, the victim, Mustain Billah Sabbir, took part in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in 2024. On July 19, 2024, while he was staying on Rabindra Sarani Road in Uttara, the accused, armed with deadly weapons and firearms, opened indiscriminate fire on protesting students and the public. A bullet struck the middle of Sabbir's left elbow, leaving him seriously injured. Several other people also sustained bullet injuries.

Local people rescued Sabbir and took him to Uttara High Care General Hospital. He was later shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) for advanced treatment. In connection with the incident, the victim filed an attempted murder case with Uttara West Police Station on October 14, 2025.

Prof Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah was arrested from his Mohammadpur house on August 7, 2025, and has been in jail since then. The court's decision today formalizes his arrest in the case.

The 2024 July Mass Uprising was a significant event in Bangladesh's recent history, marked by widespread student protests against discrimination. The incident involving Prof Kalimullah highlights the ongoing legal repercussions for those involved in the violent clashes during the uprising.
