A court in Dhaka has convicted four former officials of Dhaka Bank Limited, sentencing them to a combined 20 years in prison for criminal breach of trust, forgery, and misappropriation of funds. The court imposed a 10-year sentence under Section 409 of the Penal Code, and an additional five-year sentence under Section 471 of the Penal Code and Section 5 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. However, these sentences will run concurrently, resulting in a 10-year imprisonment for each convict.

## Convicts and Charges

The convicted individuals are Mohammad Shawkat Ali, Probir Kumar Bhowmik, Abu Mohammad Said Khan, and Kazi Farid Uddin Ahmed. Judge Md Hasanuzzaman of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-1 delivered the judgment in the presence of three of the convicts, as Shawkat Ali remains at large and was tried in absentia. The case revolves around the fraudulent acquisition of a loan using forged share certificates.

## The Case Details

The case dates back to 2002 when Mohammad Yusuf Ali opened an account with Dhaka Bank and secured a loan of TK 17 lakh using shares of Confidence Cement Limited and Meghna Cement Limited as collateral. The loan amount was later increased to TK 24 lakh. Verification revealed that the shares were forged, and the prosecution alleged that Yusuf Ali and Shawkat Ali colluded to misappropriate the bank's funds.

## Legal Proceedings

The case was filed with Motijheel Police Station on May 31, 2008, by Sirajul Haque, then Senior Vice President of Dhaka Bank. A charge sheet was submitted by Anti-Corruption Commission Assistant Director Kamiyab Aftahi-Un-Nabi on August 22, 2023, and the trial commenced on January 16, 2025. During the trial, 14 prosecution witnesses testified before the court.
