# Persistent Rain and Flooding Disrupt Road Links in Dighinala Upazila

The flood situation in Dighinala Upazila of Rangamati district has worsened following several days of continuous heavy rainfall and flash floods caused by runoff from the surrounding hills. The rising water level of the Maini River has inundated several low-lying areas of the upazila, according to official sources.

## Road Communication Suspended

Road communication on the Dighinala–Langadu and Dighinala–Sajek roads has remained suspended after several stretches of the roads went under water. More than 500 tourists have been stranded for the past two days. Water is flowing over the roads at Kobakhali, Simanachhara, Machalong Bazar and Baghaihat Bazar points on the Sajek road.

## Flood Shelters and Relief Efforts

Around 3,000 people have taken shelter in 20 flood shelters across the upazila, while nearly 8,000 residents remain stranded by floodwaters. Merung Union Parishad Panel Chairman Mina Chakma said flood-affected families in the union had been moved to shelter centres, where the Union Parishad is providing food and pure drinking water. Kobakhali Union Parishad Chairman Knowledge Chakma said more than 200 families had taken refuge in seven shelter centres in the union. Dry food and cooked meals are being distributed among the affected families.

## Local Efforts and Administration Response

Dighinala Upazila BNP President Md. Shafiqul Islam said that, following the instructions of local lawmaker Wadud Bhuiyan, leaders and activists of Dighinala have been distributing dry food and cooked meals among the families staying in flood shelters. Dighinala Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tanjila Parvez said several days of continuous rainfall had submerged large parts of the upazila, leaving many people marooned. Around 700 to 800 families have taken shelter in 20 shelter centres. Local public representatives, along with BNP leaders and activists, are distributing pure drinking water, dry food and cooked meals among the shelter residents.

## Ongoing Relief and Emergency Response

The upazila administration is maintaining round-the-clock communication and continuing relief and emergency response efforts. If the floodwater does not recede, the stranded tourists are likely to remain in Sajek. Meanwhile, the flood situation at Merung area remains unchanged. Road communication between Dighinala and Langadu is still cut off as several sections of the main road at Merung area remain submerged. The water level of the Maini River remains steady.
