A construction worker tragically died after being electrocuted while demolishing an old building in Kotchandpur upazila of Jhenaidah district on Monday. The deceased, identified as Yanur Hossain, a resident of Helai village in Kaliganj upazila, met his untimely end around 11.00 am at the Kotchandpur Government Girls' Secondary School. Yanur and several other workers were engaged in the demolition when a metal rod he was handling accidentally came into contact with a nearby high-voltage power line. Local residents rushed him to Kotchandpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared him dead. Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Kotchandpur Police Station Ansarul Haque Islam confirmed the incident.

The accident occurred during routine demolition work at the school. Yanur Hossain, like many construction workers, was involved in the hazardous task of dismantling old structures. The high-voltage power line, an ever-present danger in such operations, proved fatal when the metal rod he was handling made contact with it. The immediate response from local residents to rush him to the health complex highlights the community's effort to save lives in critical moments.

Electrocutions are a significant risk in construction work, especially during demolition tasks where high-voltage lines may be nearby. The incident underscores the need for stringent safety measures and proper training for workers handling such dangerous equipment. It also raises concerns about the infrastructure around construction sites, particularly the proximity of high-voltage lines to ongoing work.

Yanur Hossain's death is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by construction workers daily. His family and the community are left to grapple with the loss of a life cut short by an avoidable accident. The local police's confirmation of the incident brings a semblance of closure, but the broader issues of worker safety and infrastructure safety remain pressing concerns.

As the investigation into the incident continues, it is crucial to ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future. This involves not only better safety protocols on construction sites but also a reevaluation of the infrastructure surrounding these areas to minimize risks. The community's swift response in this instance is commendable, but systemic changes are necessary to protect workers' lives.
