Three active members of the infamous Sundarbans-based forest pirate group ‘Boro Jahangir’ have surrendered to the Bangladesh Coast Guard. They turned themselves in along with firearms, ammunition, and a walkie-talkie. A hostage fisherman held by the gang was also rescued during the surrender.

## Details of the Surrender

The surrender took place at around 5 pm on Wednesday in the Kolamuli Khal area adjacent to the Tambulbunia Forest Office in the Sundarbans under Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat. The surrendering individuals handed over two locally made single-barrel guns, one locally made pipe gun, 40 rounds of live cartridges, and one walkie-talkie.

## Identification of Surrendering Members

The surrendering individuals were identified as Alamin Hossain, 40, of Mongla upazila in Bagerhat, Taibur Rahman, 24, of Tala upazila in Satkhira, and Moniruzzaman Mamun, 20, of Koyra upazila in Khulna. They had long been involved in various criminal activities in the Sundarbans, including robbery and abducting fishermen and wood collectors for ransom.

## Ongoing Operations by the Coast Guard

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has been conducting two special operations - 'Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans' and 'Operation Mangrove Shield' - to ensure overall security in the Sundarbans, eradicate forest piracy, and safeguard fishermen, wood collectors, and other forest-dependent people in the coastal region.

## Recovery of Arms and Ammunition

Since the launch of the special operations on February 12 this year, a total of 49 locally made and foreign firearms, 10 rounds of live shells, 316 rounds of live cartridges, 108 rounds of blank cartridges, 194 rounds of air gun pellets, and two walkie-talkies have been recovered.
