# Bangladesh Launches Nationwide Tree Plantation Drive to Plant 250 Million Trees

Prime Minister's Political Adviser and Chairman of the '250 Million Trees in Five Years' Cell Nazrul Islam Khan stressed the importance of involving all sections of society in the nationwide tree plantation programme, transforming it into a social movement. Speaking at the fourth meeting of the cell, formed to implement the government's election pledge, he highlighted the necessity for active engagement from women, the younger generation, students, and rural communities.

## Inclusive Approach for Greater Impact

Nazrul Islam Khan emphasized that the programme should involve every segment of society to maximize its impact. He noted that nearly 43 percent of the target for 2026 had already been achieved and urged lagging ministries and agencies to accelerate their efforts, particularly during the monsoon season.

## Focus on Indigenous Species and Sustainable Practices

He also stressed the importance of planting suitable indigenous tree species in appropriate locations, considering local soil, climate, and biodiversity to ensure a high survival rate of the saplings. The plan is to plant a total of 5 crore 14 lakh 88 thousand 930 saplings in 2026 through various ministries, divisions, and agencies.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo supported the initiative, highlighting the need for regular post-plantation care, protection, and effective monitoring. He advocated for enhancing the capacity of both public and private nurseries and following the 'Right Tree, Right Place' principle.

State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam announced that two crore (20 million) trees would be planted in coastal areas during December and January, aiming to meet this year's target by next January. Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr. Md. Saimum Parvez proposed creating over 350,000 green jobs through the programme, involving women, youth, and rural communities.
